I don’t completely hate it but I hate the common interpretation of them being 20 times divorced. While comedic, I honestly think it’s wildly out of character for both of them. I don’t think they would care enough about each other to bother getting married again. Peter would actually probably prefer a loveless marriage bc that’s a lot more lonely than being divorced a million times. A lot of the divorces seem to be initiated by Elias getting angry over something small, when he doesn’t have a short temper in canon like. At all. Sorry for the essay I just have a lot of thoughts on them

@anartistwhodraws sorry for butting in but this! you're so right!! I've been saying, the divorces thing is comedic but so widely out of character it's not even them. I also think loveless marriage would be preferable to Peter for Lonely reasons people take Elias' reaction to Leitner (him telling Jon too much would have threatened his ritual) to be his normal reaction and it's just not. that's why Peter is surprised when he learns Elias killed Leitner. it's out of character for him!

What we Know about Jonah Magnus (1816-1867)

So I decided to compile everything we know about Jonah Magnus' backstory. My sources are a blend of cannon and historical sources, given that two of his letter writing associates are actual historical architects and Millbank prison is a real place. I will try to stay away from any unfounded headcannons (Though if you've read my fic about Jonah in this time period you may see where I drew events from)

I shall list chronologically first what we know from cannon and then what we know from Smirke and Millbank's historical records.

In 1816 we know he has made an association (left vague- the relationship is clearly pleasant but the nature is unclear) with a German man named Albrecht von Closen. At this point Jonah has developed a "fascination for the macabre and strange" Closen tells Jonah of the tomb full of books and the eyeless (ghost?) of Würtemburg. At this point we know Jonah Magnus is likely an adult, putting his birthday at some point prior to 1798.

In 1818, Jonah Magnus establishes the Magnus Institute. It is unclear if he serves the Eye yet at this time.

In 1824 Jonah Magnus let Barnabas Bennett succumb to the Lonely. (Whether or not you subscribe to the "they were dating" is up to you, I personally don't). By this point we know Jonah has (is about to) begin serving the Eye. We also know that he knows Mordechai Lukas and is on "good terms" with him.

Jon definitely doesn’t realize he’s doing it, but he insults people really pointedly. He somehow manages to drive it home exactly where it hurts. Is it early signs of his burgeoning Eye powers? Maybe. But more likely Jon subconsciously pushes people away the best way he knows how to— by hurting them first.

I said before that at any point in the story Jon could have kissed Elias and it would have worked, and I stand by it. But also: at any point in the story Elias could have admitted he loves Jon - and it would have changed nothing but it's delicious all the same. And yes, I mean it romantically, but It doesn't have to be romantic per say, like. Elias saying "you know how hard it would be to replace you" to Jon is an INSANE declaration to make and Jon knooows it because it makes him all stammery about it.

Like we know Elias is saying "You're my little ritual in progress Jon, I don't want to start all over again", in canon, but also he could be saying "You're my little ritual in progress, Jon, and I like you too much to bother with anyone else by now." and it would still carry soooo much and be sooo good and we know! we know that Elias loving someone doesn't mean he won't use them or let them die;

so, again. Elias. admitting to Jon that, of course, he loves him. He loves him very much. Why would he have done anything differently anyway?

I get the headcanon for angst potential, but i cannot really get behind the “og Elias is still kinda in there” headcanon because i think it’s so much sadder if he isn’t. He was replaced and murdered and his corpse is being walked around hurting people and he is dead. He was not missed, i wouldn’t be shocked if they saw his complete shift in personality as him “finally growing up.”

Jonah took over his body because he knew Elias Bouchard would only be seen as a failure otherwise, he knew no one would worry. They’d be happy. Elias Bouchard is dead and no one mourned him.

I know it’s tragedy/horror so of course most of the characters are tragic, but Jane Prentiss was lured to the attic by spiders, she was just another victim in their grand scheme and I cry

Elias' whole dealio is very silly to me. haha guys look at how much my humanity has slipped look at how much of a monster I am *does actions motivated by a deeply human hurt and commits logical fallacies only feasible for someone who feels a terribly human type of fear*

Both sides of the Martin mischaracterization exclude a ton of his character and I’m sick of seeing it

I could yap forever about Martin but at his core he’s just a character who believes himself to be deeply unloveable and has learned to mask and shape his world around affording himself some comfort
